Subject: The end is not near.

Time: 11:27 am

Archaeologist rules out end of the world prediction.

Not surprised, but this would make a good story....

Ancient god comes back to Earth, all the people who worshipped him have died out, the traditions have faded severely, and no one is here to welcome him.

He starts to wander around, makes it to some local towns, tells everyone he is this ancient deity returned to Earth!

"Yeah, right..." "If you say so..." "Get lost, pal."

Now he has to get a job and become a functioning member of society. Fuck, I was supposed to have a sanctuary!

Via Wikipedia:

'In the Star Trek: The Next Generation novel, Doomsday World, co-written by Peter David, Michael Jan Friedman, and Robert Greenberger, Geordi La Forge is sitting in a bar, the proprietor of which is described as knowing "everything about anything." Geordi asks the bartender some obscure questions about the dimensions and climate about the planet they are on, which the bartender answers, immediately and correctly. Geordi then asks, "What's the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?" to which the bartender replies, "African or European?" Geordi is forced to concede, muttering "Damn, he's good."'

Guys. Guys. I need this book.

Mood: numb

I'm posting this here because I know that a few people who have me friended or check my journal knew her.

An old friend of mine, Valerie Miranda, was hit by a truck and killed yesterday morning. The most informative article I've been able to find so far is here. Her dad is planning on having a wake or memorial service, possibly this week. Her body has not yet been released to him.

I plan on attending the memorial with a couple of mutual friends. If anyone reading this knew her and is interested in information on the memorial when I find out, send me an email and I'll keep you informed.

Subject: Mississippi Personhood Amendment

Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.

- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.

- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.

- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

The problem with LJ: we all think we are so close, but really, we know nothing about each other. So I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away.

Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you.

This comes from an article by rachelmanija entitled, Say Yes to Gay YA.
(click the link for the full article)

Our novel Stranger has five viewpoint characters; one, Yuki Nakamura, is
gay and has a boyfriend. Yuki's romance, like the heterosexual ones in
the novel, involves nothing more explicit than kissing.

An agent from a major agency, one which represents a bestselling YA novel in the same genre as ours, called us.

The agent offered to sign us on the condition that we make the gay
character straight, or else remove his viewpoint and all references to
his sexual orientation.

This isn't about that specific agent; we'd gotten other rewrite requests before this one. Previous agents had also offered to take a second look if we did rewrites… including cutting the viewpoint of Yuki, the gay character.

It's time to stand up and demand change. Spread the word everywhere if you are just as angry and outraged by this.

So, this past weekend, I got to see MJ again and discovered that she does not like Paul McGann.

That's okay. I told her we could still be friends. I might punch her in the face, block her on instant messenger, and burn down her house, but we're adults. I'm sure we can handle this in a mature fashion.

So, my bookstore closed yesterday. Deana and I moved in together about a month and a half ago. I've been more-or-less working full time at Taco Bell. My cyst has been giving me trouble, but I no longer have insurance, so I have to wait until open enrollment at Taco Bell before I can get it taken care of. I've been writing liek wo.

Oh, and this week, my manager gave me the flu.

So, uh. That's mostly why I've been missing in action on the LJ hood. How is everyone else?
